IPTV-The Net Big Revolution

There is all quiet on the Broadcast Bill front. After many heated discussions over various issues in the corridors of FICCI, ASSOCHAM, CII, various universities, political organizations people have become tired and now it is the turn of the I&B Ministry to move around and get the things cleared. Although, I personally feel nothing is going to happen and all the recommendations will land up in the cold storage of Shastri Bhavan.
Anil Ambani’s Blue Magic DTH has got the government nod. In the mean time Tata Sky and Dish TV rivalry is moving in the right line-Technology. Interactivity in programming, games, multi-angle broadcast of sports, interactive education, all are in the menu within a month or so.
CAS rollout has entered its second phase, that of ‘consumer awareness’. Not only consumers are becoming aware of CAS regulations, they have started raising voice against subjects like advertising on pay channels, monopoly of MSOs and Operators and Broadcasters arbitrary increase in channel rates. Infact they feel the MRP of Rs.5 fixed by the TRAI can be further lowered. It is a different matter that the broadcasters have gone to the court against it.
The next revolution in the making is IPTV, live television on internet. Once set in, it will outsmart all technologies in no time as it does not require a network infrastructure build-up and can be implemented by the telcos cable operators, MSOs, ISPs, DTH operators as well as mobile companies. Once started, it will encompass the whole nation in no time. The system is so efficient that there are no bandwidth constraints that are holding the progress in television distribution till now. We have given some elementary and some advanced information on the subject in this issue including a coverage of the IPTV Forum Asia at Shanghai where Cable Quest was present as a supporting publication.
We have also provided information on Indian Animation Industry in this issue which is the next big thing in content production scene after films. Indian creative manpower together with world class technology has enabled India to be one of the fastest growing animation hub in the world.
The festival season has commenced and competition to woo the consumers during this season has hotted up with more players in the Cable and DTH field. Mobile will soon join the race.
We wish you all a wonderful time.
