1/1/13 -- Describing the efforts of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry towards regulation of television as a ‘farce’ and the self-regulatory mechanisms as ineffective, MediaWatch-India has sent notice to Broadcast Content Complaints Council to expeditiously take action on certain issues raised by it or face action in a court of law.

Delhi Cable Operators gathered in large numbers at Ministry of Information & Broadcasting to protest against the Biased, anti LCO and anti consumer TRAI regulations. COFI President Roop Sharma along with a delegation of Cable Operators met the minister and appraised him about the progress of digitalization.

The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued a showcause notice to PTC news channel, following allegations of the channel airing advertisements canvassing for votes in favour of a particular political party in connection Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee. These advertisements were reportedly aired on January 26 despite the campaign period for the elections had come to an end at 5 pm on January 25.

Mathrubhumi TV, the television arm of Kerala’s Mathrubhumi Group, launched Mathrubhumi News while Kappa TV, the music channel, will go on air from 1 February.

Subhash Ghai-promoted Mukta Arts has assigned satellite and other electronic rights of its 35 films to Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) for five years. Zeel will pay Rs 250 million for the bulk movie purchase deal.

The Ministry of I&B has sought the recommendations of TRAI regarding issues relating to transmission of local channels or ground based channels operated at the level of cable TV operator/MSOs. In its reference to TRAI, the Ministry has sought to know whether there was a need to put in place a comprehensive set of provisions for local channels which would cover issues related to registration mechanism, including eligibility requirements, fee, terms and conditions to be provided for such channels, including the definition of local or ground based channels and their area of operation.

The Delhi High Court issued directions to the investigating officer to acquire the phone records of steel magnate Naveen Jindal, a few of his relatives and some Jindal Steel officials for the period from September to November 2012 and preserve them. The directions were issued on applications by Zee News Limited under Section 156(3) IPC on behalf of its chairman Subhash Chandra and its Editor Sudhir Chaudhary.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has advised Sony Entertainment Television (Set) against the telecast of an episode based on the Delhi gang rape incident. Sony was planning to air an episode based on the incident on its popular show Crime Patrol. The show airs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the channel.

The News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA), the self-governance arm of News Broadcasters Association (NBA) issued fresh guidelines barring news channels from revealing any information that divulges the name, photograph and other details of victims of sexual assault and child abuse and juvenile delinquents. The guidelines also bar disclosure of the identity of the witnesses to such incidents.
