The fourth open house on media ownership held at Bhubaneswar, with a large number of local multi-system operators (MSOs) and cable operators complaining that no time was given for persons from all over the state to come to the state capital to attend the meet. The meet was addressed on behalf of Trai by principal advisor N Parameswaran and advisor Rajkumar Upadhyay.
Comedy Central has got a stay order from the Delhi High Court against an order stopping the channel's telecast for 10 days for airing obscene and vulgar language, besides being derogatory to women. The MIB had issued a show cause notice to the channel for  violatiry  several provisions of the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority Of India (TRAI) issued two tariff orders prescribing standard tariff packages for set top boxes (STBs) for digital addressable cable TV systems (DAS) and Consumer Premises Equipments (CPEs) for Direct to Home (DTH) services. The prime objective of these tariff orders, TRAI says, is to ensure effective commercial interoperability.
The broadcasting industry agreed to abide by a 12-minute limit on advertising per hour of programming starting 1 October, agreeing to toe the regulator's line.
Cashing in on the digitisation drive, direct-to-home (DTH) operators such as Tata Sky and Dish TV have quietly hiked their base pan-India tariff by over 10 per cent.
TRAI has moved a Delhi court against a dozen cable operators for not providing details of subscribers of set-top boxes to multi-system operators (MSO) which is necessary to ensure accountability in digitisation of cable TV services. In its complaints before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vidya Prakash, TRAI said cable operators were violating its regulations concerning implementation of Digital Addressable Cable TV System (DAS). 
Two channels Comedy Central - a part of the Network18 group - and Manoranjan TV - have been pulled off the air waves following an order from the I&B Ministry. Comedy Central, the I&B ministry says, telecast a raunchy comedy show called "Stand Up Club" at 20:52 hours on 26 May last year and a show called "PopCorn" on 4 July at 7:57 pm. Manoranjan TV, on its part, aired a film with an adult certificate "Ek Chatur Naar" in the afternoon on 11 February last year. While the former has been punished wih a black out order for 10 days commencing 00.01 hrs 25 May, the latter will not be visible for a week beginning 00.01 hrs 25 May 2013. 
Justice R.V. Raveendran, former judge of the supreme court of India, is the new chairman of the News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA), the self regulatory initiative of the News Broadcasters Association (NBA). He succeeds justice (Retd.) J.S. Verma, chairperson of the NBSA, who passed away in April.
To mark the death anniversary of Jawahar Lal Nehru who died on 27 May 1964, DD Bharati is commencing the telecast of 'Bharat Ek Khoj' on 27 May. The series will be telecast from Monday to Friday and again on Sunday at 7.30 pm.
Delhi high court has asked Facebook and Google to submit suggestions on safety measures for online usage of such sites by minors in India within a period of four weeks.

TRAI chairman Rahul Khullar indicated during the open house on cross media ownership that a consultation paper would be issued shortly about the revenue sharing and other issues related to television channel aggregators under the digital addressable system (DAS).
Star India will launch a new channel Star Movies Action on 2 June. This replaces Fox Action Movies which stopped airing on 11 May.
The DD Newsnight on Doordarshan News in English topped all news channels for five weeks at a stretch from week 14 (24 March-30 March) to week 18 (21-27 April) in TAM's weekly ratings for 2013. Also, DD Samachar in Hindi was first among all news channels (including terrestrial) in that period; it was third amongst all Indian cable and satellite channels.
According to guidelines issued by The International Cricket Council (ICC) for Champions trophy, a news broadcaster may broadcast a maximum of five and a half minutes of fresh footage per day.

Information and Broadcasting minister Manish Tewari strongly condemned the attack on the Doordarshan office in Chhattisgarh's Jagdalpur district, 320 km south of Raipur, by a group of suspected Maoists.
Former deputy director general of Doordarshan and a veteran in educational television Jai Chandiram died at the age of 75.
According to TRAI's latest quarterly report ending December 2012, DTH has 54.52m subscribers.
The supreme court has once again rejected an application by the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) for staying the court proceedings in the Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh high courts. Chief justice Altamis Kabir, justice Vikramjit Sen and justice S A Bobde fixed 8 July as the date for further hearing on the petition by the IBF challenging the orders in the Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh high courts.
The Supreme Court admitted for hearing an appeal by cable operators of Delhi challenging the revenue sharing model under the digital addressable system (DAS) for cable television. Chief justice Altamis Kabir, justice Vikramjit Sen and justice S A Bobde also issued notice to the telecom regulatory authority of India (Trai) and I & B Ministry. The court also decided to list for hearing this appeal along with the appeals filed earlier by Incable and Digicable.
The Department of Telecom (DoT) is learnt to have forwarded several suggestions to the Group of Ministers, headed by Finance Minister P Chidambaram, that include BSNL and MTNL entering cable TV and broadcasting services.

I&B secretary Uday Kumar Varma stated that almost 99 per cent digitisation had been achieved in the 38 cities that were part of Phase II of Digital Addressable System (DAS) for cable television. Addressing a meeting of nodal officers from different states, Varma expressed satisfaction at the work being done by the additional secretary C Viswanath, joint secretary (broadcasting) Supriya Sahu and other senior officials.
Media mogul Rupert Murdoch is being pressed once again by dissident shareholders to step down as chairman of News Corporation. Shareholders from the US, UK and Canada filed a resolution, calling for News Corp to appoint an independent chairman.
The TRAI released a consultation paper on “Guidelines/Accreditation Mechanism for Television Rating Agencies in India” on 17th April, 2013, inviting written comments from the stakeholders by 9th May, 2013 and counter comments by 16th May 2013. On request of the stakeholders, the last date for receipt of written comments has been extended up to 23.05.2013 and counter comments, if any, by 30.05.2013.
The News Broadcasters' Association (NBA) made it clear that such high handed measures of constituting a statutory body are not needed to check the menace of paid news.
TRAI issued directions under sub-regulation (7) of regulation 5 of the regulations provides that no broadcaster of pay channels shall make available signals of TV channels to any MSO without entering into a written interconnection agreement.
TRAI issued direction under sub-regulation (17) of regulation 5 of the regulations provides that It shall be mandatory for the multi system operator to reduce the terms and conditions of the interconnection agreements into writing.
A parliamentary panel has suggested constitution of a statutory body such as a media council to look into the content of both print and electronic media or revamp the Press Council of India (PCI).
The stalemate between the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) and the Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) on the net billing issue has been resolved and the blackout by the former on accepting TV ads has been lifted. 
The transmission or re-transmission of the Movies OK channel was stopped for one day on any platform throughout India from midnight 2 May to midnight 3 May for telecast of an 'Adults only' certified film during late afternoon hours.
The Union Cabinet approved  the  decisions of EGoM meeting held on 6.3.2013 regarding amendments in the Policy Guidelines for expansion of FM Radio broadcasting services through private agencies (Phase-III).
