Technological Innovation the Only Mantra

Dear Readers,
It is disheartening that Broadcast Bill 2007, did not figure in the list of 25 Bills slated for debate in this session of Parliament. Broadcaster have opposed the Bill, which provides for a broadcast regulator and seeks to impose severe cross media restrictions, as an ill thought out legislation that was open to gross abuse by the government. Infact the industry has asked for a 12-month moratorium to discuss it threadbare but I fail to understand if so many years were insufficient for discussion. The readers may not know that the action on a Broadcasting Services Bill started way back in 1995 when the Cable Television Act was enacted.
Our industry is enjoying a boom right now. But this is only the beginning. For long analog cable has dominated the market. Now the digital DTH is spreading its wings. Although must carry clause does not give much of the distinction to the two existing platforms, their value added services like interactive news and sports, interactive games and movies on demand services are the distinguishing factor. When two more players come in the market by the year end the things will become more interesting. TRAI is also contemplating introducing HITS technology. Although general perception is that it will help digitalization, I feel it will add to the chaos of the already chaotic Cable TV industry.
Technology is growing by leaps and bonds, digitalisation is the future. Digital Cinema has brought different genre of cinema viewing. Here the movie is seen via satellite and there is no need for the reel and hence the cost is reduced. Further this technology helps in curbing piracy too.
If one has to survive in this cutthroat competitive scenario one has to dish out innovative content in which the animation plays an important part. Our story on animation takes you into the world of animation. Despite the progress in this field India's share is negligible. As per Nasscom report the animation sector in India needs 26,000 people in next two years and it currently employs 16,500 people. Hence there is a huge employment potential in this field.
Texhibition season is commencing and this year we have more broadcast shows waiting for us. I am looking around for cheaper technologies for Cable Operators to go digital, whether using digital headend, IPTV or WiMax technology.
